In the latest episode of my podcast, “Shine First Today,” I dive into the concept of a mental makeover, emphasizing the power of positive self-talk. Throughout the episode, I explore how our internal dialogues often lean towards self-criticism and negativity, particularly in mundane moments like doing the dishes or preparing for a podcast recording. I acknowledge my own struggles with negative self-perception, especially in relation to my appearance on camera and my plus-size figure.

However, I also share a personal journey of gradually learning to appreciate my efforts and the final product of my work, fueled by positive feedback from listeners. This shift in mindset is likened to clearing mental clutter, much like we would tidy a physical space. The episode is not just about recognizing negative thoughts but actively reframing them into neutral or positive ones, a practice I’m committed to mastering in 2024.

I introduce practical strategies for nurturing positive self-talk, such as establishing uplifting morning rituals, engaging in mindfulness practices, cognitive reframing, gratitude journaling, and indulging in joyful activities. An example is shared of transforming a simple movie night with my granddaughter into a memorable event, highlighting the joy in everyday experiences. The importance of positive social interactions is underscored, with personal anecdotes illustrating their impact.

I stress the significance of self-compassion, treating oneself with kindness and understanding, and the value of professional guidance when negative thoughts become overwhelming. The episode concludes by encouraging listeners to adopt these strategies and to approach changing thought patterns with awareness and enjoyment, rather than suppression. This episode marks the beginning of a six-part series focused on cultivating a positive mindset for a more fulfilling life.
